AST Coilovers for Mini R50, R52 & R53 (2002-2007)

Coilovers for the R50 One and Cooper, the R53 Cooper S (the JCW GP included) and the R52 Convertible, 2002 to 2007. For the hatch AST offer the rear dampers non-inverted or inverted, so pick the rear set-up first and then the series; the Convertible is listed with the inverted rear only.

• R53 kits cover the John Cooper Works GP

Check before you order

• Two rear set-ups (AST's notes): non-inverted rear coilovers, with the rebound adjustment at the top, for the R50 and R53 hatch; or inverted rear coilovers, inverted for reach to the adjuster, for the hatch and the R52 Convertible.
• With the original wheels, AST say the front needs a 5-10mm spacer.
• Front droplinks are included; rear droplinks are optional and not included (AST part DLA-10-188-206).

Choose your series

Every AST damper is a monotube: nothing inside can aerate or foam, which AST say keeps the valving responsive.

5100 Street, non-inverted (AST ACS)

The 5100 Street kit with conventional, non-inverted monotube dampers, adjustable for rebound damping and ride height. Springs come in the kit, which works with the car's original top mounts. AST fix the rear spring rate for each car. The rebound adjuster has 12 positions, and the dampers can be rebuilt.

5100 Street TCO, coilovers front and rear (AST ACU)

5100 Street Performance TCO (AST ACT)

The 5100 Street Performance kit in TCO form: monotube coilovers front and rear, adjustable for rebound damping and ride height. Inverted at the front; at the rear, inverted or non-inverted as the Rear dampers option says. Camber-adjustable front top mounts are included, and solid rear ones where the car needs them. Adjustable camber lets you set the angle of the front wheels, and with it how the front end grips. The rebound adjuster has 12 positions, and the dampers can be rebuilt.

5100 Clubracing (AST ACC)

The 1-way kit for cars that see track days as well as daily miles: monotube coilovers front and rear with top mounts at both ends. Inverted at the front; at the rear, inverted or non-inverted as the Rear dampers option says. The front top mounts adjust for camber; the rear ones are solid. Spring rates can be changed to suit. Ride height adjusts, the rebound adjuster has 12 positions, and the dampers can be rebuilt.

5200 2-Way Motorsport (AST RIV)

Rebound and compression damping each have their own adjuster, and ride height adjusts too. Compression damping sets how quickly the suspension moves in; rebound sets how quickly it extends again. The dampers work with external reservoirs, mounted remotely. The struts are inverted, which AST use because that design copes with heavy sideways loads and with braking. Where the car needs them, camber-adjustable front and solid rear top mounts are included. Spring rates can be changed, and the rebound adjuster has 12 positions. AST made it first of all for track driving.

• RIV-B1301SD (Non-inverted (hatch only)): Mini Hatchback R50/R53

5300 3-Way Motorsport (AST RAC)

Three separate damping adjusters - rebound, low-speed compression and high-speed compression - plus adjustable ride height. Low-speed compression looks after slow, gradual movement of the suspension; high-speed compression looks after sharp, hard hits. The dampers work with external reservoirs, mounted remotely. The struts are inverted, which AST use because that design copes with heavy sideways loads and with braking. Where the car needs them, camber-adjustable front and solid rear top mounts are included. Spring rates can be changed, and the rebound adjuster has 12 positions. AST's kit for the most committed circuit drivers.

Fitting notes

• 5200 and 5300 kits: the rear comes with an extender for the adjuster knob, which needs a 12.5mm hole drilled, and the rear dampers are non-inverted.
